Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Occupational health and safety specialists’ jobs may sometimes require individuals to implement new preventive measures as required by the law or the company they are working for. Other duties and responsibilities may include:

What Education will I need?

Most people enter this profession through on-the-job training. In other instances, employers will consider candidates with postsecondary education, such as a certificate, an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree. These courses often take four years or less to complete and usually include hazard communication, respiratory protection, material-handling, and storage procedures.

However, some employers will sometimes look for individuals with at least a diploma or bachelor’s degree in the health and safety field. Other organizations will require you to have a master’s degree in health physics, industrial hygiene, or a related field. Employers who are a bit conservative will only consider candidates with an accredited degree or diploma and experience only in science-related disciplines.

Work Ennvironment & Schedules

Health and safety professionals work in a wide range of settings, including factories and offices. Regardless of their place of work, their duties often involve considerable travel and fieldwork. That means they are often exposed to stressful, strenuous, and dangerous conditions.

Whether you’re an occupational health and safety specialist or engineer, you’ll be required to use respirators, helmets, and gloves. The sole purpose of these and other personal protective and safety gear needed is to reduce the chances of injury or illness.
Usually, a health and safety executive works full-time – typically 9 am to 5 pm, Mon to Fri. However, you may be required to work on weekends, at night or irregular hours in case of emergency or changes in working shifts.

While H&S certification is voluntary, it gives you a competitive edge during an interview. Any health and safety engineer is required to have completed an accredited education program as well as several years of experience in order to write certification exams. There are a plethora of institutions that offer certification courses, based on your field of work. Candidates with several certifications as well as experience in any of the occupational health and safety careers often have better prospects.

Compensation Potential

A health and safety executive can take home between $50,780 and $73,020 in annual wage. However, professional qualifications and experience will sometimes determine your salary level. That means candidates with three years’ experience or more can expect anything close to $70,000, while new hires may get roughly $50,000 annually.

Other factors that determine compensation potential include the sector, location, and the size of the organization you’re working for. Most large companies, for instance, offer other benefits such as bonuses, medical insurance or a company car. Job Outlook

The employment of H&S professionals is expected to increase by 6.5% between 2018 and 2028. Both technicians and specialists will be required in large numbers to work in a diverse range of organizations, from small consultancies to multinationals. Perhaps, this is because ensuring compliance with all health and safety standards as well as workers’ compensation and insurance costs have become a concern nationwide. In addition, the aging population holding a great proportion of health and safety engineer jobs will need replacement as the years go by.
