Primary Duties & Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of a health and safety engineer often involves planning and implementing new policies to ensure safety standards. Occupational health and safety specialists’ jobs may sometimes require individuals to implement new preventive measures as required by the law or the company they are working for. Other duties and responsibilities may include:
- Identifying potential hazards in the companies they work for
- Training employees on emergency preparedness as well as other ways to protect workers from potentially hazardous work conditions.
- Collecting samples of potentially toxic materials for analysis
- Inspecting and evaluating workplace equipment, environments, and practices for compliance with the law
- Investigating incidents or accidents to establish their cause and identify how to prevent an occurrence of the same in the future
What Education will I need?
Most people enter this profession through on-the-job training. In other instances, employers will consider candidates with postsecondary education, such as a certificate, an associate degree or a bachelor’s degree. These courses often take four years or less to complete and usually include hazard communication, respiratory protection, material-handling, and storage procedures.
However, some employers will sometimes look for individuals with at least a diploma or bachelor’s degree in the health and safety field. Other organizations will require you to have a master’s degree in health physics, industrial hygiene, or a related field. Employers who are a bit conservative will only consider candidates with an accredited degree or diploma and experience only in science-related disciplines.

Essential Qualities
Important skills for any health and safety executive include patience, diplomacy, attention to detail, or ability to understand and analyze complex industrial processes or data. Work Ennvironment & Schedules

Any health and safety engineer is required to have completed an accredited education program as well as several years of experience in order to write certification exams.
